As we hit the one-year anniversary of COVID-19 changing life as we knew it, we might struggle to look past the downsides. But many health organizations have found a way to make the best of a tough situation. Here are some examples of how Coffey clients are making lemonade from lemons…and some challenges for you!

Spotlight on heroes

Most people know that healthcare is hard work. That fact has only been highlighted by the pandemic. Many news reports feature standout healthcare workers, giving attention to people who are putting their lives on the line. On that note, one photographer joined forces with Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau to take portraits of healthcare workers and first responders for an exhibit in the hospital. The photographer has been posting these photos on Instagram at @helpingeyesJuneau.

Keeping patients on task

Patients can easily find reasons not to worry about preventive healthcare this year. However, many health organizations want to keep people from bypassing lifesaving tests. For example, Kettering Health Network in Ohio is giving many patients the opportunity to experience 3D mammograms in a relaxing setting. Enhancements to the environment include a flat-panel TV with soothing images, ambient sounds to go with these images, a scent unit and a warm robe to wear.

Your challenge: How can you encourage patients to come in for uncomfortable preventive tests?

Tying the knot(s)

What do you do when a wedding day or anniversary celebration is wiped out by COVID-19? A hospital in the Methodist Healthcare system in Texas makes it their mission to help couples still tie the knot, even if that’s in a hospital room or hallway. They know these events can often lead to faster healing. That means birthday celebrations and anniversaries are events worth celebrating too.   

Your challenge: How can you help patients make the most of special days that have been sidelined by COVID-19?

Triumphing with telehealth

The pandemic has put telehealth in the limelight. Butler Health System (BHS) in Pennsylvania launched their telehealth program in 2017 for rural communities, but they’ve seen a persistent need for it during the pandemic. Although virtual visits aren’t quite the same as in-person, the providers at BHS have been able to make necessary connections with patients. These visits help patients get through tough times and stay healthy. In addition, BHS uses video calls to connect patients with family members.

Your challenge: How can your staff reflect on the positive aspects of virtual appointments?

Setting high standards

Kootenai Health in Idaho is overcoming pandemic challenges as well, but that didn’t keep them from maintaining high standards in other areas. For the third year in a row, they received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Award. This year, that was a gold-level achievement. That means their stroke patients are given the right treatment according to research-based guidelines.
