Featuring doctors brings benefits

Featuring doctors brings benefits

For physicians, life isn't always about clinical work. If you're looking to engage with providers at your organization and potentially improve retention, one action you can take is to offer them a publication that celebrates their stories outside of medicine. Here is how one health system did that.

Adventist Health Sonora wanted to engage with their staff, many of whom work at separate locations within the hospital and its clinics. The result is The Pulse, a magazine that helps providers get to know "another side of the person you see in scrubs." That was one of the goals that Teddy Griffin, Director of Rural Health Clinics Operations and Clinic Services, had for Sonora's quarterly publication.

The Pulse is mailed to the homes of physicians and other providers at Sonora. It also goes out to local providers who have practicing privileges at the organization.

A physician publication: Why it matters

This strategy of targeting providers has the potential to add value to your organization by inspiring connections among the staff. An inspired and engaged staff could help with physician retention.

Physician profiles and more

The Pulse packs in a variety of engaging features that make for interesting discussions among providers as they get to know each other better. These include:

Why I became a provider. This feature shares why a provider got into medicine and why they love doing what they do.

Organization news. The Pulse also updates readers on
what's happening around the hospital and in the community. These stories have included articles about new or enhanced services, as well as other happenings related to patient care.

Physician spotlight. Every issue of The Pulse shines a light on a doctor's or provider's hobby or other passion. This allows their co-workers to get to know them a little better and see what they're up to. They may discover mutual interests.

We're hiring. This feature updates staff on open positions and encourages them to recommend someone for the job.
